david r munson

drew is a really serious biker from denton

perfect pic of chris lee

drew again

nick from denton

drew again

please check out his photography. he does shit for cog magazine and he was down in san marcos last saturday and in denton this summer when chrisx, j, joe and i were there.

i'm looking forward to the stuff he shot in san marcos, even if it was a poorly planned event.
seriously, the hometown advantage was way up there. we got two austin teams in the top four, but those of us out of towners who didn't bring san marcos road maps were utterly lost 90% of the time. j and i had to ask at every checkpoint where the next one was.

our boys from houston, as well as aj and peru from college station, were competitive in best trick (aj tied for first with tony from sm with backwards circle barspins) and did well in the race considering that both towns are fucking FLAT AS HELL! tyrone's bridgestone is gorgeous and paul's new volume rig is the jam.

damn i love those city of crank kids. they bring the game. and the trash talk.

Now don't get me wrong...

I'm not trying to hate on H+Son by any means...
In fact I'm saving up to order some of their rims for a new wheel build.
The creator is a nice guy and actually listens to what people have to say via forums, blogs and emails.
Not to mention having a VERY attractive and legit product.

...but what happened?

I saw this over at HKFixed and actually went WTF?

Now as some of you know, HKFixed actually sells these rims in their shop.

So, I'm sure they weren't trying to give H+Son a bad name or anything...

Also, I'm sure there is a reasonable explanation for the rim blowout.

Maybe the rim was laced wrong? Or it was just part of a bad batch?

I've only heard good things about these rims and how much people love their H+Son rims.

Also, please keep in mind that this was only ONE isolated incident!!!

I'll keep you all posted on any more info that comes up...

Till then... H+Son is still going to get my support!

Aerospokes are out...

So I came across this frame builder named Olli Erkkila. He created the "SUV fixed gear bike" a while back...
For those of you who haven't seen it, here it is:

This thing is SICK!

Olli then comes out with some ridiculous wheels that are beyond SICK!
These are similar to Aerospokes but are made entirely out of steel!
This one is on a custom frame he built up for the wheels.

Personally, I like his vintage Peugeot track bike a little better:

You can see more of his work at his website:
ollierkkila.com

Happy bike pr0n viewing everyone!

Weekend!

Greetings and salutations interwebs!

So this is my FIRST official post on this blog as a contributing member.
And I'm stoked to say the least!

Okay, so recapping the events of the weekend and reviewing everything that went on... I just have to say this: EPIC!!!
For those of you who know me personally, there isn't too many things that really keep me from having a great day nevertheless a weekend.  But this we especially good!

First off, the POWER CAT 2 was on Saturday as you can see from an earlier post.
I drove up there with Andrew, J, Joe and David R. Munson: a friend of mine from Denton.
We were all pretty excited that I was getting to race in a totally new town.
Once we got there, we all got to see a bunch of friends we haven't seen in a good minute: San Marcos crew, a few kids from College Station, and the H-Town couriers/friends. Getting to see and race with all of them was definitely one of the highlights of the night. And it was awesome seeing a good number of Austinites at the race too!
All in all we all had a great time racing and a better time hanging out with old friends and even making a few new ones!
I just want to say thank you to Alex, Ben W., Baker (for showing Joe and me the way around the town haha) and the rest of the San Marcos crew for a great time! I can't wait for Power Cat 3!

Okay, the next race was on Sunday.
It was a Cyclocross style alleycat around the Hike and Bike trail.
Personally I've always wanted to do a cyclocross race and I was WAY pumped when I got to finally race in one!
Now, let me go and say this: THIS WAS THE MOST FUN I'VE EVER HAD RACING IN AN ALLEYCAT!!!
It was straight up EPIC to the 1,000,000,000,000th power.
Since I only had one bike I had no choice but to run my track bike for this.  And to tell you the truth, it was so sketchy!
I fortunately threw on some Vittoria Randonneur Cross tires before the race.  I also opted to ride clipless, which by the way helped IMMENSELY!
But the whole time I was just having the TIME OF MY LIFE!
It was dark. I didn't know where to go or where I was going. I was fishtailing around every turn. I had one too many close calls. And I caught some sweet airs jumping out of little ditches and jumps in the path.
This is going to be a multi-stage race so keep your eyes peeled for more days of cross excitement to come!
And according to Brian, its going to get even more intense.  Can you say riding through mud in a cold down pour while jumping over barriers?
Hell to the YEAH!
Thanks Brian for an awesomely epic time! Can't wait till the next stage! Will Wolfe and me are going to DOMINATE!

This has been an AWESOME weekend full of bike racing and good times!
And there are even more coming up on Thanksgiving!

Ahlee and me are teaming up for this one... Hope to see you guys all out there on Thanksgiving!
This one is going to be good, I can feel it in my bones!

Take care everyone,
xChris Leex

kyoto loco edit and reasons why this weekend was awesome!

KYOTO LOCO '08 from Eli Tokyo Jitensha-Jin on Vimeo.

sick edit from jitensha-jin's blog of the 200 person messenger event in tokyo last week.

check out the tie-die paint job we had all dreamed of on that starfuckers frame!
the backwards circles! that guy will not stop!

also, the spinergy rear track wheel and the baseball helmet instead of a bike helmet are noteworthy details.
check out more of jitensha-jins edits on vimeo. great sense of cinematography and timing!

this footage of some fumikiri dudes has the brand new jan frame john talked about , and some beautiful handlebars by lino that you can find at Chari and Co NYC, my new favorite track bike street style website. peep it.

hey thanks to everyone who came out for the first friday race!
getting third in the main race and third overall was really awesome but considering i was up on the podium with cloyd, jk and matt b (who are all beasts!) i was definitely honored to participate. i'll put some pictures up when i get some developed.

the swap meet was pretty much picked over by the time i got there on saturday at 1030, but i managed to find a Selle Italia Flite saddle for twenty bucks, sold my 26.6 zeus seatpost to jason from atxbs.com, and joe built up a bike for his girlfriend with better components for less money than any of the rest of us own for ourselves: black low flange phil woods to velocity fusions for $200? the early bird definitely gets the worm, joe, even if you were too late to get the hed trispokes.

there were some really incredible deals there, and the guy who owns the old campy warehouse in houston had some beautiful new old stock cranks and cages and a gorgeous old 60s masi road bike.

today i was looking for a cheap, maybe weatherproof bag that could fit in my front basket on my razesa (yeah, a front basket on a track bike) and i randomly decided to ride over to treasure city/yellow bike on twelve street. i wasn't hoping for much, but the rain clouds were cooling things down enough to ride east. i snagged a banjo brothers mini-messenger bag that was made for my basket for ten bucks at the thrift and a cheap set of flat bars at yellow bike.

thanks for everything.

new bike blog!

hopefully this can become the go to site for all you gearless freaks in sweaty austin, tx!
much love to all the bike bloggers we read and respect!

i hope you have all seen this video, but i want you all to check Matt B clearing the ramp on this jump. they had already moved it back TWICE!

thanks for the race and the quick edit, J and Joe! i'm getting some pictures developed of the race tomorrow.
corrections: cloyd DOWLING, not DOWNING, and JK got second, not third.

here is an older shot of Matt tearing it up. this was shot right after Lance
Armstrong flew all the MASH SF folk down and Matt and James Newman
(obviously) had some shred time together.
we all miss that old pink vivalo, but his new samson ain't half bad, either!
