Chris King

Chris King finally does integrated headsets. They've been making them for a while but it's been an under the table sort of deal. They make them and give them away for free to get feedback. If you've ever run an integrated headset you know they're SHIT. On the other hand, if you've ever run a Chris King headset you know they're FUCKING AMAZING. Only time will tell on this one. If any of you get one let me know what you find and we'll do a report on them.

Read more here.

Monster Track X Profiles

Our friend Michael Green over at Bike Blog NYC has been putting up awesome little profiles of the noticeable and up and coming faces of past Monster Tracks and the up coming Monster Track X race this weekend.

Some of the profiles include:

Crihs Thromann

Mario "Alex" Ferarri... You might recognize him from an earlier post. You know, the video that Gatorade made for their top athlete thing.

Dan Chabanov... This dood is a beast!

And of course,

Kevin "Squid" Bolger, the Michael Jordan of alleycat racing!

I'm surprised he hasn't mentioned Alfred, Austin or Felipe yet... maybe in a future post?!

Check it out and get stoked for his coverage on Monster Track X this weekend and his DVD of Monster Track VIII!

This is for...

the people that likes bikes and girls... COMBINED!
I'm surprised I haven't come across this photo blog before considering how much I post and visit cycling blogs and forums (yeah, I know, Dancakes and me are interweb nerdz)
I came across it while checking out the Open Bicycle blog

This blog is called Girls On Bicycles!
It features photos of girls on well... bicycles! haha
Most of them feature track bikes or fixed gear bikes but some are from cross and road races that are way GNAR!

Seriously, a lot of these photos make my cycling skillz look insignificant!

They even have some photos of that one Japanese girl that is straight KILLING it!

She even has that the infamous "Starfucker" frame!

I think this blog is pretty cool.
There aren't too many girls on bikes in general and its always cool to see more of them around and riding for themselves and not for their boyfriends.

Check out the blog here!
There are photos of some Austin girls too! Including Bee and her awesome Basso!

Ciocc

Saw this over at HKFixed... then saw it on Tracko, Prolly and every other "fixed gear" blog. haha

Ciocc is releasing their "vintage" series bikes. They're reissued track and road bikes back from the good ol' days of lugged Columbus steel.

This particular one is the Mockba 80.
It comes with Columbus tubing and is brazed welded with a Miche group, sick Quattro Deda quilled stem, an areo wheelset and a Rolls saddle to boot!
Considering whats all on there for the complete, $1000 is a pretty good price for what you get!

This bike looks pretty clean and Ciocc did a great job at keeping things OG with their "vintage" bikes.

Check it out at their website!

HOLY MOTHER OF PEARL!

Saw this over at Tracko

Mosher going NUTZ at Hubba Hideout in SF!
I used to see this spot in lots of skate vids way back when...
This is literally insane! The thing is pretty tall and you have to get on it right away because its pretty short.

Amazing!

and now back to your regularly scheduled blog...

i have never seen anything like that box combo. ever.

bolt on cogs

saw an interesting article over at the metro track blog about the bolt on track cogs they are producing. they also did some product reviews of wheels their cogs are compatible with and i was blown away by the fact that they recommend bolting their cogs onto FRONT wheels that are compatible with disc brakes!

surly!
bontrager!
chub!

an endless number of companies are now making front disc wheels that you can convert into a fixed rear wheel for only $40! they stock 1/8'' and 3/32'' in 16-20 tooth cogs. they are american made. they are amazing.

---------------------------------------------------

i first became aware of the bolt on design through scott hansen's level hubs design. he uses 3 bolts and eyelets to create a hub/cog interface that is more durable and effective than the traditional threaded cog and lockring in offroad fixed gear, or any fixed gear environment. the issue here, one which metro track brings up, is the proprietary nature of most of the current bolt on hub/cog designs. level hubs and cogs only work with level hubs and cogs, a set of which can cost $400 plus a $70 cog. hansen recommends the tomicog, which is practically the same thing as the metro cog, but it's $10 cheaper and is currently in production, whereas the metro cog seems to still be in proto status.

one thing i find interesting is the difference in theory and application that these manufacturers have. tomicog and level are creating these designs for off road mountain bike application, where as metro track is taking mountain bike technology (disc brakes) and converting compatible wheels into trick/track wheels, theoretically for freestyling and for alleycat situations.

in my opinion, the fact that there are people out here willing to help you replace the standard threaded hub option for $30 plus however much money it takes to buy a front disc wheel at frankenbike (i.e. not very much) is a definite sign of the progression of our sport, our bikes, and our technology.

ah, progress.

NAHBS 2009

the North American Handmade Bike Show is in Indianapolis this year. i was going to look at some of the exhibitors this beautiful sunday morning, but i only got to check out one builder before i HAD to share it with you! i'm sure all of the builders are incredible, so please check them out!

Portland, Or's Ahearne Cycles. make sure you check out some of the pictures, but the one that blew my mind was the fixed gear mountain bike!

especially the front brake cable routing, the tire size and custom fork (4 inches!) and the tech pictures of the owner riding some crazy shit!

the touring bikes are awesome, too, with details such as stem shifters and removeable spork headbadges for your dinner!

man i love bikes.

$200?

shit son. that's a damn deal. looks like i'm going to houston soon.

craigslist ad here.

speaking of wooly mammoth team...

pics of their new kit from their training retreat last month.

way too sick. the mammoths and the pink show they mean business.

it's baaaaaaaack!

john and i BOTH got outbid on this jewel right before x-mas.

seriously a brilliant saddle that i would be proud to add to my quiver of flites. i have 4, of which only one is on a bike.

whatever, ahlee has TWO merkcx road bikes and three track bikes, so at least my obsession is a little more localized. and affordable.

two blogs added

i just added the san marcos fixed blog and nic ibarra' blog.

the fabulous chaz chazerson and ben doubleu run the san marcos blog, which lately has been getting press here and here with their work on bootleg 3, and also their fabulous feetbelts!

nic is a local messenger and road/track racer extraordinaire. he placed third in the solstice race and rides for woolly mammoth, the local bike team. his blog is insightful, succinct, and full of his personal racing opinions and tactics. his bike is kind of famous in these parts. it's the red moyer.

mystic unicorn and our 100th post!

49cm centurion track frame. pdx craigslist and ebay for $450 'buy it now' without wheels.

god bless it. travis rode one of these in MASH. the bottom bracket shell snapped while he was riding it down a ramp. suntour dropouts, fork is drilled and there are bosses for a water bottle cage. i owned several centurion conversions and have been looking for one of their track bikes for a few years now. now that i do, it's too small.

hey this is our 100th post! and i installed a counter at the bottom of the page, too.

yoshimi

john's conversion might have died this week, but we got his spokes in on friday and built him some wheels for his new 3rensho, yoshimi.

took some pretty iphone photos over at bjs and natalies shop, fast folks.

grand mighty cranks, box rims laced to phil woods, 100% legit.
nothing can hold him back, not even staples to the head.
